How It Works

Etymology is the study of the origin and historical development of words. Every word in the English language has a story — tracing back through centuries of linguistic change, borrowing, and evolution.

Language Families

Most English words derive from a handful of major language families. Germanic roots form the core of everyday English (from Old English and Old Norse), while Latin and Greek contribute heavily to scientific, legal, and academic vocabulary. French influence arrived primarily through the Norman Conquest of 1066, reshaping much of English vocabulary.

Word Roots and Morphology

Words are often composed of roots, prefixes, and suffixes. For example, the word telephone combines Greek tele- (far) and phone (voice). Understanding these building blocks helps decode unfamiliar words and reveals connections between seemingly unrelated terms.

  • Proto-Indo-European (PIE): the reconstructed ancestor of most European and many South Asian languages, spoken roughly 4500–2500 BCE.
  • Cognates: words in different languages that share a common etymological origin, such as English night, German Nacht, and Latin nox.
  • Semantic shift: over time, word meanings can narrow, broaden, or change entirely. For example, nice originally meant "foolish" in Middle English (from Latin nescius, "ignorant").
  • Borrowing: English is notable for absorbing words from many languages — from Arabic (algebra) to Japanese (tsunami) to Nahuatl (chocolate).

This tool uses a built-in dictionary of curated etymological data. All processing runs entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server.
